Alsace in a glass
In the small village of Rosheim, at the foot of the Vosges, Sophie Kumpf and Philippe Meyer have run Domaine Kumpf et Meyer since 1997. The estate counts around 15 hectares spread across some seventy small parcels on clay and limestone soils — a patchwork that’s so typical of Alsace.
The arrival of Julien
In 2010, winemaker Julien Albertus (Jeux de Vins) joined the estate, opening a new chapter. Under his lead, the vineyards converted to organic farming and the classic Alsatian recipes in the cellar were turned upside down. For Julien, the organic charter is “not strict enough” on its own — he wants a radical break with conventional cellar practice.
In the vineyard
Living soils, underground biodiversity and patience form the foundation. No synthetic fertilisers, no herbicides, and as much manual work between the vines as possible. Each parcel is vinified separately because every patch of ground has its own story to tell.
The grapes and the style
Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Muscat, Sylvaner and Pinot Noir — the full Alsatian palette, but in a tighter, drier, livelier style than you usually find in the region. Spontaneous fermentations, long élevage and bottling whenever the wine is ready. No clichés, just pure Alsatian terroir.
